What is a BSN Number?

The BSN (burgerservicenummer) is your Dutch citizen service number. It is required for working, opening a bank account, accessing healthcare, and receiving government benefits. Every person registered in the Netherlands receives a BSN.

How to Register and Get Your BSN

Step 1: Make an appointment at your local municipality (gemeente). Step 2: Bring your passport (biometric if possible), proof of address, and birth certificate. Step 3: Register at the BRP (Basisregistratie Personen). Step 4: You will receive your BSN within 5 business days. For Ukrainians under temporary protection: registration is often handled at the central reception location.

Why You Need a BSN

Without a BSN you cannot: get paid employment, open a Dutch bank account, receive healthcare through the basic insurance (basisverzekering), apply for toeslagen (allowances), or file a tax return. It is the most important number for your life in the Netherlands.
