Extension of Temporary Protection: Key Changes

On 13 June 2025, the Council of the European Union adopted a decision extending the Temporary Protection Directive (Council Directive 2001/55/EC) until 4 March 2027. This means that Ukrainians residing in the Netherlands under temporary protection retain their status for at least another year.

What Does This Mean for You?

1. Right of Residence. Your residence permit is automatically extended until 4 March 2027. You do not need to submit a new application — the IND will extend your sticker or O-document automatically.

2. Right to Work. You retain the right to work without a separate TWV permit. Your employer only notifies the UWV. For self-employment (ZZP), a TWV from the UWV is still required.

3. Healthcare and Social Support. Access to medical care, education, and social assistance through municipalities is maintained.

4. Travel. With a biometric passport, you may travel within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days. Note: absence from the Netherlands exceeding 28 days for those registered in municipal locations may result in cancellation of protection.

What Happens After 2027?

The European Union is planning a transitional period. If the situation in Ukraine does not improve, protection may be extended again. Otherwise, transition to other statuses (work permit, study) or return to Ukraine will be the options available.
